recent years, achieved fame with his own Skiffle Group (Skiffle; an informal singing of blues, ballads, worksongs or hymns by a small group, the singing being generally accompanied by guitars, and the rhythmic background provided by a washboard player).
Before leaving the British scene, mention should be made of the bands of Cy Laurie, Mick Mulligan, Sandy Brown and Eric Silk and of the jazz and blues singing of Ottilie Patterson, Neva Raphaello and George Melly. All these musicians, and others, contributed to the healthy and enthusiastic traditional jazz movement in England.
la Brief-—The Revival in France
There is not room in this volume for a detailed survey of the jazz movement in Europe. But any book on jazz should mention the jazz scene in France where, before the war, the music played at the Hot Club of France aroused great excitement—in parti­cular the violin and piano playing of Stephan Grappelly and the guitar of Django Reinhardt. After the war, France played an important role in the traditional revival, from the inspiration of such figures as Claude Luter, Claude Boiling and Pierre Braslavsky.
